Fearing the government may be spying on them, one in three Americans cover their computer cameras, according to a survey.

The poll on privacy by found that more than 70 percent of Americans believe the government spies on the daily activities and social media of its citizens, the Washington Examiner reported.

The poll found 31 percent believe that Washington is personally watching their internet browsing.

And many Americans are doing something about it:

  • 34.8 percent cover their computer webcam.
  • 23.5 percent turn off smart devices.
  • 14.1 percent do not usual social-media websites.
  • 12.8 percent use encrypted emails.

The poll found political differences, with Republicans more supportive of spying on religious groups and immigrants. said in its analysis suggested several ways to protect sensitive information.

One is to use complex passwords, even though memorizing them may be burdensome.

Another is to implement a private phone number or a VPN to obscure one’s browser history in case a site visited is compromised in a digital attack.

“A little extra work to safeguard your daily online and over-the-phone activity can go a long way in preventing prying eyes from getting into your personal business,” said.
